Bridge expansion joints are designed to allow continuous traffic between structures while accommodating movement, shrinkage, and temperature variations in reinforced and prestressed concrete, composites, and steel structures. They stop the bridge from bending into place under extreme conditions, and also allow sufficient vertical movement to allow bearing replacement without the need to dismantle the bridge expansion joint.
